Application

Functional Description

The Area/Line Coupler connects two KNX lines to form a logical functional area while providing galvanic isolationbetween the two lines.

This allows each bus line within a KNX installation to operate electrically independent of the others.

The function of the device is determined by the selected parameterization and the assigned physical address. The device can be used as:

  • Area Coupler

  • Line Coupler

  • Segment Coupler

  • Line Repeater

Use as an Area Coupler (AC)

Physical Address: X.0.0

The Area Coupler connects a subordinate backbone line to a superordinate area line.

Group communication can be configured with or without filtering.

The Area Coupler is logically assigned to the subordinate backbone line.

Use as a Line Coupler (LC)

Physical Address: X.Y.0

The Line Coupler connects a subordinate line to a superordinate backbone line.

Group communication can be configured with or without filtering.

The Line Coupler is logically assigned to the subordinate line.

Use as a Segment Coupler (SC)

Physical Address: X.Y.Z

The Segment Coupler connects a subordinate line segment to the superordinate line segment of the same line.

Group communication can be configured with or without filtering.

Using Segment Couplers allows the first line segment to be expanded with additional parallel line segments.

The Segment Coupler is logically assigned to the subordinate line segment.

Use as a Line Repeater (LR)

Physical Address: X.Y.Z

The Line Repeater connects a subordinate line segment to the superordinate line segment of the same line.

Unlike the Segment Coupler, communication is performed without group address filtering.

Line Repeaters also allow a KNX line to be extended by additional parallel line segments.

The Line Repeater is logically assigned to the subordinate line segment.

Power Supply

Each area line, backbone line, line, and line segment requires its own dedicated power supply.

The electronics of the Area/Line Coupler are powered from the superordinate bus line.

Use as a Secure Proxy

KNX Data Secure protects building automation systems against manipulation and can be configured within the ETS project.

For maximum protection, all devices should support KNX Data Secure.

If individual devices cannot communicate using secured group addresses, a Secure Proxy enables communication between KNX Data Secure devices and devices that do not support KNX Data Secure.

Devices with and without KNX Data Secure must be installed in separate lines or segments.

Planning, Installation, and Commissioning

Planning, installation, and commissioning are carried out using the ETS:

  • ETS 5.7.7 or later when used as:

    • Area Coupler

    • Line Coupler

    • Line Repeater

  • ETS 6.1.1 or later when used as:

    • Area Coupler

    • Line Coupler

    • Segment Coupler

    • Secure Proxy

Firmware Update

The device supports firmware updates using ETS version 6.4.0 or later.
